Homeschool Strategies

Working from home while homeschooling can be a challenge or a blessing. It’s all about how you manage your day. If you’re a parent who works from home and you’re thinking about homeschooling your child, here are a few strategies:

1. Plan out your day. Creating a schedule and to-do list you follow daily helps minimize distractions and keeps everyone on task for the day.

2. Remain flexible and expect the unexpected. There isn’t one homeschool day that I’ve had that everything went according to plan. It’s always good to remember to expect the unexpected. Things are going to happen. Meetings will run over. Your child may finish an assignment earlier than expected. There may be an emergency, or you get off task. Don’t be upset; deal with each situation calmly.

3. Teach your children how to manage. Teaching your child how to manage the day will alleviate stress and the “Mommmmmmmyyyyy! Dadddddyyyyyyyy!” interruptions. If you keep items such as their favorite toy, a book, puzzles, etc., within reach, they can move to an activity if you’re still working on a project. This goes back to planning the day.

4. Take breaks. Taking breaks is excellent for both you and your child. Step away from work and academics to walk, watch a show, play, or relax.

5. Keep your vision at the front of your mind. Remembering your why will help you get through the day. When you’re frustrated, thinking about sending your child back to school or questioning your ability, remember your WHY! You decided to keep your child at home (insert your reason).

Being a homeschool parent and working from home isn’t an unattainable dream. It can happen with the right mindset and preparation.
