Three Ways Data should be used in an IEP Meeting

IEP meetings ensure that students with disabilities receive appropriate educational services and accommodations. Data plays an integral part in these meetings by providing valuable information to help make informed decisions and create effective IEPs.

Here are three ways to use data in an IEP meeting :

1. Data from assessments and evaluations can be used to track a student's progress over time. This is called progress monitoring; this information helps the team understand the student's present level of performance and functional levels.

2. Using data to identify a student's needs allows a team to look at specific areas where the student struggles academically, socially, or behaviorally. Using data also helps the team identify the student's strengths and weaknesses.

3. Data allows the team to make sound decisions that will give the child access to the curriculum at their level. It also allows the team to amend the IEP based on the student's needs, set measurable goals, and ensure that the student is in the least restrictive environment.

If you’re a parent reading this, ensure data is always presented in an IEP meeting. This helps provide the foundation for a successful IEP implemented effectively based on the student's needs. We all want our students to win and have access to the curriculum.
