Don't Isolate Sight Words

Please note 👉🏾 sight words are a text's most commonly used words. They are taught through memorization and ARE NOT an indicator of the child’s reading level.

One of the best ways to teach sight words (after children have memorized them at their own pace) is by incorporating them into your daily instruction.

Here are two strategies:

1. Use the words to build a sentence.

2. Read books with CVC words and sight words.

Sight words ARE NOT the key to reading instruction. The key to reading instruction is teaching phonemic awareness and phonics.

Note: I was in this classroom last week, and the children knew the sight words but DID NOT know the sounds of the alphabet, couldn’t recognize some of the letters, and could not write their names. This was a class that will be in K in the fall.

We have to do better.
