Why I'm not a Fan of Word Families

Whew! My opinion isn’t popular, but I’ve seen enough scholars come through my center who have been taught word families and still can’t read. The babies struggle because they rely on a strategy and look at the ending instead of approaching the word by decoding from left to right.

Teaching “word families” is an excellent way for children to memorize words that follow the same pattern. Fight your local reading coach.

What if they see a “family” in a word that doesn’t make the same sound they’ve learned? Reading is simple. We don’t need to add anything to it. Start with phonemic awareness and then move to phonics. Teach the sounds and blend them from left to right. When the child has mastered those areas, move to fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. We’ve been serving children for over seven years, and the system works. No frills! No fluff! Just follow the rules for reading.
