Short Vowel and Spelling Strategy

Use letter tiles + vowel tents to work on short vowel recognition and spelling.

📕Short vowels are the five vowel sounds typically heard in stressed syllables of English words.

The short vowels are a, e, i, o, and u.

While teaching the vowels, you can also incorporate spelling using CVC words. A simple way to do this is to combine instruction.

In this video, the scholar is

1. Identifying the short vowel sound when given an oral word. She’s doing this by choosing the short vowel tent with the correct sound for the given word.

2. Then she spelled the word using the letter tiles.

I’m making sure she knows the individual sounds (phonemic awareness) and she can put those sounds together to form a word. This skill is critical for beginning readers.

Blending sounds and assessing the scholar’s understanding of short vowels through spelling allows you to track their progress. Activities like this build strong readers.
