Sound Boxes

Sound or Elkonin Boxes build phonological awareness skills by segmenting words into individual sounds or phonemes.

You can use counters, letter tiles, tokens, etc., to move into a box to represent the sound. Make sure you use different colored items to differentiate between consonants and vowels.

Sound Boxes help:

Build phonological awareness

Teaches the child how to segment words

Helps the child identify phonemes

Helps the child develop a relationship between the phoneme and grapheme
