Foundations of Literacy: Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension (Group Instruction)

Welcome to Foundations of Literacy, a dynamic and interactive class designed to build essential reading skills for young learners in grades 1-2. This course focuses on four key components of literacy: phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Through engaging activities, hands-on practice, and personalized instruction, students will develop a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.
Course Objectives:
Phonics: Students will learn to recognize and produce letter sounds, understand letter-sound relationships, and decode simple words. Activities will include phonemic awareness exercises, blending and segmenting sounds, and practicing sight words.
Fluency: Students will work on reading smoothly and accurately with appropriate expression. Through guided reading, repeated reading, and fluency passages, students will improve their reading speed and confidence.
Vocabulary: Students will expand their vocabulary by learning new words in context. Interactive read-alouds, word walls, and vocabulary games will help students understand and use new words in their reading and writing.
Comprehension: Students will develop skills to understand and interpret texts. Strategies such as predicting, questioning, visualizing, and summarizing will be taught through read-alouds, shared reading, and independent reading activities.
